designed to be the U.S. equivalent to the U.K.'s Mercury Prize, is voted on
by a panel of hipster recording artists and producers. The winner will be
announced Oct. 29th. For more info go here.
AND WHILE WE'RE ON THE SUBJECT of awards, E (Mr. Mark Oliver Everett, that
is) won Best Songwriter at the L.A. Weekly Music Awards last month. We didn't
mention it because he doesn't like to brag, and thinks trophies belong in the
locker room. But since we're on the subject, he never let us tell you that
EELS won for best band at the L.A. Weekly awards in 2000. We're risking our
jobs by telling you this. In the end, who really cares? Still, know that EELS
appreciate the support.

BEAUTIFUL MORNING CD will be discontinued when current stock is gone.
4/28/2002 AND THE WINNER IS:
Thanks to everyone for sending in your great EELS websites. Everyone here at EELStheband.com enjoyed each and every submission. The winner was chosen for sheer imaginative use of a website. Butch's hat, which he wore at virtually every EELS concert from 1997-2001 will be awarded to our friend Ben Hubble for his great site EELS IN VEGAS, an entire site dedicated to persuading the EELS to play a concert in Las Vegas. Did it have any sway in their decision to tape the Carson Daly show in Vegas last week? We can't say. Anyway, Congratulations! Wear Butch's hat with pride, but remember: with ownership of Butch's hat comes responsibility. Please wear Butch's hat responsibly. Check out the winning site HERE.
BUT THERE'S MORE: We here at EELStheband.com have decided to create a special website award, the EELS FANSITE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, which comes in the form of a set of SIX vinyl EELS singles. This award goes to Husky for his great work on his EELS site 3 Speed. Updated fairly regularly with lots of, sometimes, informative features, this is no fair-weather fansite! Sticking with EELS through thick and thin. Through rock and roll. Thanks, man. Please enjoy autographed vinyl copies of:
Susan's House/Stepmother
Your Lucky Day In Hell/Altar Boy
Last Stop: This Town/Funeral Parlor
Cancer For The Cure/Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas
Mr. E's Beautiful Blues/Birdgirl On A Cellphone (picture disc)
Souljacker part I/I Write The B-Sides (picture disc)
And the rest of you, please keep sending us your EELS site addresses and
we'll add them to our LINKS page. Check out the just updated LINKS page HERE.

namely his new baby daughter Hope, born at 8.45 am, February 19th, weighing 7
lbs / 3.18 Kilos. It was reported that had the baby been a boy he would have

will be joining the boys this time out. If you haven't seen Joe play guitar,
you need to come see him rock the house. Check out the confirmed dates so far
here. More to come.
2/12/2002 TEN MINUTES OLDER: Making it's premiere at Cannes this March is the film Ten
Minutes Older. Eleven directors, including Bernardo Bertolucci, Jean Luc
Godard, Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee and Wim Wenders have made ten minute films

1/17/2002 AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL FREAK:
America sure has been getting some tough knocks lately. What a year. And to add insult to injury, the EELS' new album comes out several months after the rest of the world got it! Well, the EELS feel your pain (they are American, after all) and so the U.S. release of SOULJACKER will be a DOUBLE DISC SET. The album will have a bonus EP, like the British edition, but with a new song, ROTTEN WORLD BLUES, not released anywhere until now. The EP also includes I WRITE THE B-SIDES, JEHOVAH'S WITNESS and HIDDEN TRACK, a plainly visible track made up of titles fans sent in to EELStheband.com. In stores March 12.
1/15/2002 I LIKE BIRDS CASE SETTLED Rondor Music and EELS front man Mark Oliver Everett ("E") have settled out of
court. Last year Rondor authorized the use of E's song I LIKE BIRDS to be
used in a Spanish television commercial for a giant shopping center ("I can't
stand in line at the store," etc.) without E's permission. It is expressly
written in E's contract with Rondor that his songs not be used in
commercials. E learned about the commercial from Spanish journalists while on
tour in Spain. The commercial was pulled from airing immediately, and at E's
request, Rondor will donate all writer's & publishing proceeds to the Sweet
Relief Musician's Fund for musician's in need of medical assistance.
Lance Freed, President of Rondor Music (and son of Alan Freed, the man
credited with coining the term 'Rock & Roll') said, "We certainly respect the
wishes of Mark Everett and have moved quickly to rectify the situation."
In the past month alone, E's songs have been requested for use in Coca Cola
and McDonald's commercials.
"It's pretty Strange," says E. "I don't understand why these companies want
these songs. Car companies always ask for 'Mr. E's Beautiful Blues' and the
first verse is about pollution. It's official: no one is paying attention
anymore. I think it's important to stay outside of all that, even if it's one
of the only ways for people to find out about your music. Just because
everyone does it now doesn't mean it's right."
